Mercifully, in everyday life we tend to give little thought to the fact that at some point in the future we will all be forgotten! But nevertheless, there are moments when the character of places and events allow this suppressed knowledge to surface (a missed liaison, a lost glove, a disused building, a felled tree). Of course, in one sense, everything can be emblematic of this condition – but to see it that way would be a ‘psychosis’ – a failure to live in the present. However, in the right context and in the right frame of mind, such confrontations can be positive and afford us a reconciliation, helping us live with a greater sensitivity and compassion towards life.
All the above are places which possess that sense of quiet and patient waiting - of abiding. It may be brought to presence through neglect, or inaccessibility, or remoteness, but they all feel as though they are enduring and persisting outside of the turmoil of everyday life and, having slipped into a world where the passage of time has been stilled, their silence speaks of the tectonic movements underpinning our everyday consciousness. Making the drawings is an attempt to attend to this significance.
