Tony Aldrich is a contemporary abstract artist based in Plymouth in the South West of England. Following a career as an architect and then as a university lecturer in Architecture he has been a full-time artist since 2013.

Working with acrylics and collaged media his work reveals the lessons learnt from architecture. But in addition to the expected faith in drawing and making there is also a strong focus upon composition, tectonics, and a delight in the crafting of coherent wholes from seemingly disparate components.

“Now more than ever it seems we need to find ways out of the spiritual and environmental impasse that our preoccupations with polarised thinking and individualism have led us into. We need a more fulfilling and sustainable conception of ourselves. Working with painting and collage allows me to wrestle with this dilemma and construct a meaningful way forwards. In particular, the work of artists such as Alberto Burri, Conrad Marca-Relli, and Howard Hodgkin serve as enduring guides.”

Tony exhibits throughout the South West and is a member of the Plymouth Society of Artists and of the 21 Group of Artists.
